Australian Sailing Club Directory

Search the Australian sailing club directory by club name, suburb or activity, then filter by state or territory. Each profile brings together available YouSail club information and source links. Use the state guides to compare local sailing waters, and ask the club to confirm current lessons, membership options and visitor arrangements.

For a directory, that distinction is important. A person looking for an Optimist or ILCA junior pathway does not need the same club as someone wanting to crew on a 40-foot keelboat. An offshore racer has different requirements from a social cruiser. A trailer-sailer owner may value ramp access and trailer storage more than a marina berth. A windsurfer or wingfoiler may care about beach access and coaching rather than a traditional clubhouse.

The main ways to compare Australian sailing clubs#

By location#

Start with the water you can realistically reach.

A club 20 minutes away can be more useful than a famous club two hours away if you want weekly participation. Regular sailing usually depends on practical access, not just the quality of the venue.

The directory covers all Australian states and territories and can group clubs by region, suburb and sailing waters where the YouSail data supports it.

By club type#

Names reflect history and tradition, but they also provide useful clues.

Common identities include:

• yacht club
• sailing club
• yacht squadron
• dinghy sailing club
• skiff club
• multihull or catamaran club
• trailer-sailer club
• cruising club
• university or school sailing club
• inclusive or Sailability organisation
• class association

Treat these as discovery categories, not rigid definitions. Two yacht clubs can have completely different fleets and facilities.

By vessel#

The strongest predictor of whether a club suits a sailor is often the boats that actually sail there.

• dinghies
• skiffs
• keelboats
• sportsboats
• trailer sailers
• offshore yachts
• multihulls
• beach catamarans
• foiling boats
• windsurfers
• wingfoils
• accessible sailing boats
• junior training boats
• mixed fleets

Primary boat classes should then be listed separately.

By sailing activity#

A club can support several kinds of sailing at once.

Important categories include:

• fleet racing
• one-design racing
• handicap racing
• twilight racing
• offshore or ocean racing
• passage and coastal racing
• match racing
• teams racing
• short-handed racing
• cruising
• social sailing
• learn-to-sail
• junior and youth sailing
• school and university sailing
• foiling
• windsurfing
• wingfoiling
• inclusive sailing
• coaching and training

By facilities#

Facilities become especially important when a sailor owns a boat.

A dinghy owner might need mast-up storage and a launching area. A trailer-sailer owner may need secure trailer storage and a suitable ramp. A keelboat owner may need a marina berth, mooring, crane, travel lift or nearby boatyard.

For a beginner using club boats, those same facilities may be almost irrelevant.

A national framework, local clubs#

Australian Sailing is the national sporting body and, following the One Sailing governance changes, delivers services nationally. Affiliated clubs participate in that framework, while individual club membership remains a relationship with the club itself.

Australian Sailing's recognised program environment includes introductory, learn-to-sail and development pathways, but clubs differ in what they actually deliver.

The directory therefore treats national program names as verified attributes, not assumptions.

Racing rules and safety#

Current club racing in Australia operates within the broader framework of the 2025-2028 Racing Rules of Sailing where those rules apply. Offshore and other racing may also involve Australian Sailing Special Regulations, race-category requirements, class rules, rating rules and event-specific documents.

A directory should not attempt to replace a Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions, class rules or a club safety briefing. Its job is to help users understand what category of sailing a club conducts and direct them to the official source.

What makes a useful club listing?#

A strong club page should answer practical questions quickly:

• Where is it?
• What water does it sail on?
• What boats are common?
• Does it run organised racing?
• Is there social sailing?
• Does it teach children?
• Does it teach adults?
• Is it Australian Sailing affiliated?
• What is the current sailing season?
• Is there storage?
• Is there launching?
• Is there a clubhouse?
• Is there food or a bar?
• How do I join?
• How current is this information?

Browse by state#

• New South Wales
• Victoria
• Queensland
• Western Australia
• South Australia
• Tasmania
• Northern Territory
• Australian Capital Territory

Each state page explains the sailing environments a user may encounter and then relies on the live YouSail records to list clubs.
