Sailing waters
Mannering Park occupies a peninsula at Lake Macquarie's southern end, on a water body widely described as Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake. The clubhouse block at the end of Grace Street was granted to the club once the sewer was connected, and members erected the rescue boat shed and clubhouse themselves; the result is a modest but perfectly positioned base with a wide view across the lake and the race course. The suburb has a long lakefront reserve, a sea scout group and a tourist park, so summer weekends bring a steady audience of non-sailors to the shoreline.
Racing takes place on the open lake in front of the club. Detailed wind records for the venue are not published, but Lake Macquarie's size and open fetch make it honest sailing water, and the southern basin in front of Mannering Park gives race officers room to set proper courses rather than the short, tight beats river clubs must live with. Trailerable boats launch easily, and the fleet mix — fixed-keel yachts, trailer sailers, catamarans and dinghies all working the one broad expanse — says plenty about the lake's accommodating nature.
The Wednesday twilight race deserves a second mention here because it is so bound up with the place. As the fleet works past the foreshore in the evening light, locals come down to the water's edge to watch, and the club itself describes the spectacle as a weekly event that helps identify Mannering Park with sailing. Few small clubs anywhere in New South Wales are so visibly stitched into their town's evening routine.

Training and sailing programs
The standout offering is the school-holiday Learn to Sail course, run each October and January for kids aged eight to sixteen. The format is deliberately family-friendly: three consecutive days from nine in the morning until three in the afternoon, followed by three consecutive Saturday morning sessions, so the learning has time to settle between bursts on the water. Club dinghies are supplied as part of the registration fee, NSW Active Kids vouchers are accepted, and the course proceeds rain, hail or shine.
Content follows the Australian Sailing Dinghy "Start Sailing 1" syllabus — terminology, launching and coming back to shore, sailing a set course and capsize recovery — with a completion certificate at the end. Adult learn-to-sail courses run as well, such as the Saturday course held across March and April 2024.
As an accredited Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre, the club also invests in the people doing the teaching. In June 2023 it hosted a Dinghy Instructor Course run by Australian Sailing NSW, preparing instructors to deliver the Start Sailing 1 and 2 and Better Sailing levels, with the HerSport HerWay subsidy covering half the cost for women and girls. The club supports Duke of Edinburgh's International Award participants through sailing and membership, and its free Discover Sailing Days — such as the afternoon held on 28 October 2023 — let the curious try a yacht, catamaran or dinghy before committing.
Racing development happens through the weekly program rather than a formal academy: Saturday club racing across the yacht, catamaran and dinghy fleets, the popular Wednesday twilight race, and regatta hosting that includes the 2025 Open Skiff–Laser–Dolphin Chaser Regatta and a December All Boats Regatta serving as a catamaran traveller series venue.
Club history
Organised sailing at Mannering Park began with a regatta on 14 March 1969, followed in May that year by a first meeting attended by fifteen people. The new club decided to back Sabots, VJs and a third, open class, and general sailing ran from September 1969 through to April 1970, boats gathering at the Point, where the ladies' auxiliary ran a kiosk. That kiosk, together with a "200 Club" fundraiser, bought the club's first rescue boat for $913 in 1970 — an early sign that fundraising and volunteer effort would carry the club.
The search for a permanent home began in 1970, with presentation nights held at the Progress Hall and trophies donated by local businesses. In 1979 the club bought a caravan to serve as a kiosk, started sailing clinics for children and began racing from the block at the end of Grace Street, though toilets had to wait for the sewer. By 1985 sailing was organised from the Point, twenty-five people attended that year's AGM, and the fleet had shifted towards trailer sailers and small fixed-keel yachts with a couple of dinghies.
Once the sewer arrived, permission followed to build a rescue boat shed with toilets on the Grace Street block, and the present clubhouse went up with members' skill and labour.
In 1997 the club incorporated as Mannering Park Yacht Club Inc., the new name reflecting the changing boat types, though it continues to trade under its original amateur sailing club identity. Catamarans joined the Saturday fleet in 2002–03. The honour board runs from first President Ron Durie (1969–74 and again 1976–80) through the title change to Commodore in 1988, with John Skewes serving as Commodore from 2010 and Bruce McWhirter a long-serving secretary.
