Sailing waters

Belmore Basin is one of the oldest artificial harbours on the NSW coast, a small working port tucked under Wollongong's lighthouse headland, and the yacht club occupies what it calls the best spot on the harbour — looking straight out over the basin, the little lighthouse and the foreshore. The moorings here matter to the club's identity: the modern club was effectively founded on a block of commercial moorings transferred by ten members in 1973, after all private moorings in the basin had been relocated behind the western breakwater two years earlier.

The sailing water is the open Tasman Sea along the Illawarra coast. North lies the run to Port Hacking past the Royal National Park cliffs; south, the coast rolls past Bass Point's volcanic headland to Kiama and its blowhole. This is true ocean sailing — swell, sea breeze and the occasional southerly buster — and the club sails it twelve months a year. Summer twilight races make use of long evenings in the relative shelter of the nearshore zone, while the fortnightly offshore program stretches crews further. The Australia Day Regatta turns the harbour into a three-day festival, and the Coal Coast Classic sends a genuine ocean race up the coast each October long weekend.

Ashore, the clubhouse has been the club's longest project. After a grand marina-and-clubhouse scheme was knocked back by the Department of Lands in 1968, the club spent decades meeting in borrowed rooms — the Master Builder's Club through the 1970s and again from 1988, the Wollongong Sheltered Workshop, the Sea Cadets Hall, Port Kembla Sailing Club and, from 1992, the local leagues club. The current clubhouse at the harbour has been progressed piece by piece with member labour and modest government grants, and the "yachties cafe" has become the gathering point after every race and social sail — proof, if any were needed, that a club can live a long time on moorings, determination and coffee.

About Wollongong Yacht Club

Wollongong Yacht Club is a harbour-based sailing club on the Illawarra coast offering organised racing, social sailing and an accredited learn-to-sail pathway. The club runs a range of keelboat training courses (Discover Sailing, Start Crewing, Start Helming, Start Skippering) and promotes events including regattas and regular race series. The club also provides information on club moorings and vessel guidelines and has an on-site kiosk for visitors.

The club is associated with the Illawarra sailing area. Directory classification: Keelboat. Commonly listed classes or sailing focus include Keelboats. Current sailing-directory information indicates junior or learn-to-sail activity. It appears on Australian Sailing's 2026-27 affiliation update in Band 19. Public contact information is available via phone, email, website.

Training and sailing programs

Wollongong Yacht Club's training model is built around crew development rather than dinghy instruction — the classic keelboat club pathway. Its front door is the Discover Sailing experience, open to anyone in the community aged sixteen or over who wants to try ocean sailing, stepping straight aboard a keelboat rather than starting in a small trainer. From there, the club's real engine kicks in: skippers take new members on as crew, and the learning happens berth by berth, race by race.

It's an apprenticeship culture that suits a club whose members pride themselves on helping each other out, and it feeds people not only into sailing roles but into the volunteer jobs that keep a member-run club functioning.

The club announced in 2020 that it would begin dedicated learn-to-sail classes, and the Australian Sailing directory lists it as a keelboat club with kids' learn-to-sail available, extending the pathway below the sixteen-year-old entry point of the Discover Sailing experiences. That combination — junior instruction feeding into youth and adult crewing, crewing feeding into skippering — mirrors the club's own history, in which members progressed from harbour racing to offshore events like the Lord Howe Island Race and the Sydney to Hobart.

Racing itself functions as the ongoing training ground. Fortnightly events alternate between local offshore races and longer ocean runs to Bass Point, Port Hacking and Kiama, giving developing crews exposure to coastal navigation, spinnaker work offshore and the particular discipline of passage racing in the East Australian Current's territory. Summer twilight sailing offers a gentler weekly rhythm for newer sailors.

For those with competitive ambitions, the Coal Coast Classic and the Australia Day Regatta provide genuine open-water tests, while the calendar's social regattas and raft-ups make sure the learning environment stays friendly. In a region without another keelboat racing club, WYC effectively trains the Illawarra's entire offshore sailing community.

Club history

Wollongong Yacht Club began, oddly enough, with a failed marina. The club's records open with a meeting at 66 Kembla Street in May 1966 — the second meeting, no less — where the founding group's attention fixed on plans for a new breakwall across Wollongong Harbour, with architects sketching a clubhouse and marina behind it. Then, in January 1968, the Department of Lands killed the project. Subscriptions were returned — but at a meeting on 25 March that year, members led by David Waters voted to carry on anyway, with what the club history calls a slightly lowered agenda. Australian Sailing dates the club's establishment to 1968.

The rebuilding was pragmatic. Affiliation with the Yachting Association of NSW was initiated by 1970, when the current constitution was adopted. When private moorings in Belmore Basin were cancelled in late 1971, ten members transferred theirs to the club's name in 1973; classified as commercial, the moorings permitted cruising use and visiting boats and, in the words of the club history, ensured a viable club. Fees in 1974 were ten dollars, and that November the first Wollongong to Kiama race was held. A 1975 push to rename the club the Wollongong Ocean Yacht Club was voted down.

The offshore era followed: Denis Pomfret took his Swanson 32 Isa Lei to the Lord Howe Island Race in 1977, with Hammond, Harris, Flear and Ring making the same voyage through the 1980s; Reg Harris's Ecstasy V contested two Sydney to Hobarts from 1986. Kevin Browning started the first Ladies' Skippers race in 1984 and drove the big-fleet Port Hacking to Wollongong races; 1987, with its 200-milers and beach barbecues, is remembered as the zenith.

The club incorporated in 1989, elected its first woman commodore, Bev Ring, in 2000, and watched membership climb from around 40 to over 100 by 2020. Its history project honours Howard Waters, the club's only life member, and the Lieutenant Matthew Flinders Navigator's Trophy ties the club to the Tom Thumb voyage of 1796.
