How to use this worksheet
Record what you were actually told and the date. Write “not confirmed” for an unanswered question; a blank does not mean no. This is a personal planning aid, not a safety assessment, booking or qualification.
Ask the organiser what clothing, footwear and personal equipment suit the exact session before buying or packing. The arrangement depends on the boat, expected exposure, conditions, duration and participant—not simply whether it is summer.
Use the checklist below to track preparation. It does not replace the provider's instructions or a safety-equipment check.
Start with the boat and session

Do not assume a course includes wetsuits or that ordinary clothing is adequate for immersion. Ask about borrowing or hire before purchasing technical equipment.
Confirm lifejacket arrangements separately
Establish who supplies the required lifejacket, how fit is checked and what type is appropriate for the activity. The NSW Government explains that selection depends on the activity, conditions and applicable requirements; its guidance is jurisdiction-specific, not a substitute for other states' rules.
Use the official resources page and follow the organiser's requirements. Availability and fit need confirmation, especially for children or participants with particular needs. Clothing does not replace flotation equipment.
Choose footwear with the organiser
Ask about grip, deck requirements and whether footwear will be immersed. “Non-marking” describes a property, not a reliable colour rule: a light sole is not automatically suitable, and a dark sole is not automatically unsuitable.
Check that footwear stays secure during the tasks you will do. Do not rely on a generic recommendation for trainers if the provider requires something different. Bring changing footwear if useful for the journey home.
Combine sun-protection measures
Cancer Council recommends combining protective clothing, sunscreen, a suitable hat, sunglasses and shade. Discuss how to apply these measures during your activity and follow sunscreen product instructions for application and reapplication.
A hat or sunglasses should not interfere with required equipment or introduce an avoidable snagging issue. Ask how to manage personal items on the boat. Shade may be available ashore but limited during the session, which makes preparation important.
Plan for wet clothing and the trip home
Ask whether wet-weather layers, thermal protection or a wetsuit are required. Air temperature alone does not settle the clothing decision. If supplied items are promised, confirm sizing and what happens if they do not fit.
Leave dry clothes and a towel where recommended. Establish whether changing facilities are available for your session rather than inferring access from a building or photograph. Confirm what can actually come aboard and how it should be stored.
What should you buy later?
Buy to solve a confirmed need once you understand the sailing you will continue doing. Ask which equipment must be your own, which can be borrowed and what specifications apply. A shopping list should follow your participation plan, not dictate it.
Keep initial purchases separate from recurring fees in the sailing budget calculator. For children, allow for fit checks as they grow rather than buying unsuitable equipment simply to last longer.
