Read a sailing course's cancellation and rescheduling terms before paying. This guide is a booking checklist, not a statement of legal entitlements or the policy of a particular club. The relevant provider must confirm the arrangement for your booking.

Separate three cancellation situations

Situation Question to ask
The provider cancels a session Is there a replacement date, credit or another arrangement?
You cannot attend What notice and options apply under the booking terms?
The course starts but you miss part of it Can you complete the missed content later, and at what cost?

These situations may have different terms. Do not assume a policy for a whole-course cancellation also applies to one interrupted session.

Weather changes and replacement dates

Ask who makes the decision and how participants are notified. Record the contact number or channel and how late a change may be announced. If alternative dates are already scheduled, check that you can attend them.

A course may include shore-based learning when conditions affect the planned activity. Ask how the provider handles that situation and whether additional water time is offered. Obtain the answer for your course rather than relying on another participant's past experience.

Personal absence and transfers

Before booking, check the process if you become unavailable, arrive late or need to change dates. If the provider offers a transfer, clarify whether it is to another course, another participant or a credit with an expiry date.

For junior bookings, also establish what happens if a child is not ready to continue. A discussion with the instructor may help identify a suitable next step, but it does not by itself establish a refund arrangement.

A booking record to keep

Save the course title, venue, dates, total payment, included equipment and the terms shown when you booked. Keep any written agreement about support requirements or alternative dates alongside the confirmation.

Record:

  • Provider cancellation arrangements.
  • Participant cancellation notice.
  • Missed-session options.
  • Transfer or credit conditions.
  • Contact method for changes.
  • Any dates on which you cannot attend.

Comparing two offers

Two courses with the same price can differ in scheduling flexibility. If your work roster changes, include this in the comparison before choosing. Use the shift-work sailing guide to plan realistic attendance.

The course booking checklist covers equipment and prerequisites. The cost calculator helps estimate the broader first-year budget.

Example enquiry before you pay

You could write: “I can attend the advertised course dates, but I cannot attend the following weekend. If weather changes a session, what replacement options would apply to this booking? Please also confirm what happens if I miss one lesson and whether any transfer has a fee or expiry date.” Add your actual dates without including unnecessary personal information.

Compare the reply with the written booking terms. If the two appear inconsistent, ask the provider to clarify before you purchase. Save the answer with the confirmation so you can refer to the same arrangement later. This example helps organise a conversation; it does not establish what a provider must offer.

Is a credit the same as a new confirmed booking?

Do not assume so. Ask whether you must choose a date, whether places are subject to availability and whether there is a price difference. Check who the credit is issued to and how it is redeemed. If a replacement course is at another venue, revisit your transport plan and equipment arrangements before accepting the date.

Confirming a club’s policy

Find the provider through the contact or website linked in the YouSail directory, then read its current booking information. We do not infer refund policies from club categories or copy one provider's terms onto another profile.

A directory entry is not a confirmed course, crew vacancy or equipment offer. Ask the club about your intended activity.
