Tackers Sailing: Junior Learn-to-Sail Programs

Tackers is Australian Sailing's introductory sailing program for children. Use the official program information to understand the pathway, then use the chosen centre's booking details to confirm the age group, dates and price it actually offers. A YouSail field saying junior learning is available does not establish that a club delivers Tackers.

Tackers levels and progression#

The official detailed overview describes the main levels for ages 7–12 and Little Tackers for ages 4–6. Intro is not a prerequisite to Tackers 1. Check the centre's current age and readiness requirements; the program name alone is not an enrolment decision.

Compare actual course offers#

Record the full price, number of sessions, duration, venue, equipment and cancellation terms for each offer. A shorter introductory session should not be compared directly with a full course.

Ask whether missed or weather-cancelled sessions are rescheduled. If a holiday course conflicts with one of your dates, clarify the attendance requirement before paying. Read the course booking checklist alongside the registration page.

Clothing, supervision and arrival#

Ask what children should wear and bring, where the handover takes place and when parents should return. Record the contact method used for late changes. If a child has access, communication or support needs, discuss these before registration.

Confirm swimming and water-confidence arrangements with the instructor. Use the swimming requirements guide for questions, rather than assuming all children or all sessions have the same requirements.

What to ask about practice after the course#

An introductory course is one part of a sailing routine. Ask for the next available practice option, whether a boat is provided and whether it has a separate charge or membership requirement. Get a named contact and a date to follow up.

Progression need not mean immediately buying a boat or entering races. Ask which activities suit the child's interest and confidence. Compare options using the junior club checklist.

A parent’s booking note#

Keep a short record of:

• The exact course and venue.
• The child's accepted age group and any agreed support.
• Session dates, arrival and collection times.
• Included equipment and clothing to bring.
• Total payment and cancellation arrangements.
• The next practice option after completion.

This makes it easier to compare two centres and avoids relying on an old promotional page.
