A good club will not necessarily answer every question with “yes”. The purpose of this checklist is to identify fit.

Sailing#

A no-nonsense shortlist method#

Create three columns: must have, strong preference, and irrelevant to my decision. Put every club feature into one of them before you browse. This prevents large hospitality venues or famous event histories from distorting a sailing decision.

For most sailors, must-have items are few: the right activity, realistic travel, a boat/crew pathway and any essential storage or accessibility requirement.

Test the failure modes#

Ask what could make you stop attending after two months. Common answers are travel, no follow-on sailing, no storage, inability to find crew, cost creep or a class mismatch. Resolve those before joining.

Test the growth path#

Then ask what you might want in two years. A beginner may want racing. A junior may move into a different class. A crew member may want to helm. A cruiser may want longer passages. A club does not need to satisfy every future goal, but knowing the likely next step prevents unnecessary churn.

Keep unknowns visible#

If a decisive field is Not verified, contact the club rather than eliminating it or assuming the favourable answer. Good directory design helps users see what needs checking.
